Nick Diaz has confirmed his intentions to fight before the culmination of this year, and hopes to skip the welterweight cue and fight defending champion, Kamaru Usman in his Octagon comeback.

Diaz, 38, snapped a six-year hiatus away from the sport back in September in the form of an eventual middleweight division rematch against former welterweight titleholder, Robbie Lawler – suffering a third round knockout loss in their main card matchup.

The defeat came as Diaz’s tenth professionally, with his most recent victory coming in the form of an impressive unanimous decision victory against former duel-weight Octagon gold holder, B.J. Penn in a December 2011 Octagon comeback.

Challenging for both undisputed and interim welterweight gold during his tenure with the organization, Diaz, a former undisputed WEC and Strikeforce champion, saw his future return to the subject of conversation earlier this year, with his long time coach, Cesar Gracie confirming his intentions to land the Stockton favorite another UFC walk before the end of 2022.

Speaking somewhat candidly on his immediate fighting future, Diaz did, however, confirm he plans to fight again before the end of this year, and while potential opponents for a return fight were unknown, Diaz mentioned his wishes to challenge Usman for welterweight gold from the get-go.

“(We’re) working on the end of the year,” Nick Diaz told TMZ. “I’m just focused on training right now. If I’m going to fight, I want to fight for the title. … They (the UFC) want to say that I want to fight a bunch of guys and stuff like that. Well, you know what? It’s a bigger fight (a fight with Kamaru Usman).”

“Just skip all the mess, I don’t need to go in there and get my ass whooped by one of the young guys, anyway – and ti’s not that I won’t win,” Nick Diaz explained. “It’s just not motivating to fight somebody that’s – I want to fight for the title. I’m 38 years old.”
