UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has yet to obtain medical clearance to make his expected Octagon return before the culmination of the summer, after the Auchi native recently underwent a surgical procedure to address a ligament injury in his hand.

Kamaru Usman, the current welterweight champion and pound-for-pound number one under the UFC banner, was widely earmarked to defend his 170lb crown against the #2 ranked contender, Leon Edwards in a title rematch this summer – potentially in July, however, a recent hand surgery threw the matchup into jeopardy, for the summer, at least

The Nigerian bruiser has been out of action since UFC 268 back in November of last year at Madison Square Garden, successfully defending his welterweight title in a unanimous decision rematch win against former interim titleholder, Colby Covington. The victory came as Usman’s fifth successful defense of his welterweight throne.

Still expected to draw surging Team Renagade BJJ & MMA staple, Edwards next, Usman’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, informed ESPN MMA reporter Brett Okamoto that his client has yet to obtain medical clearance to make an Octagon return.

“Spoke to Ali Abdelaziz about Kamaru Usman’s hand,” Brett Okamoto tweeted. “He said as of now, Kamaru has not been medically cleared and there is no timeframe on his return. Kamaru only started slowly testing the hand.”

Usman, who plys his trade under the tutelage of Trevor Wittman at ONX Labs, added a second career win over Covington to a pair of undisputed title defenses against Jorge Masvidal, as well as a blistering knockout win over former Sanford MMA teammate, Gilbert Burns during his tenure as welterweight kingpin.

Speaking with assembled media during UFC 274 earlier this month in Phoenix, Arizona – Usman confirmed that the organization were targeting a title rematch between himself and Edwards, however, due to his failure to obtain medical clearance amid his hand surgery, a timeline for his return to the re-run wasn’t nailed down.
