UFC 274 big winner, Brandon Royval has claimed that the decision from the organization to introduce an interim title to the flyweight division leaves 125lbs in somewhat of a “hold”.

Brandon Royval, who managed to scoop his second straight victory at UFC 274 as well as the #5 rank in the official flyweight pile, stopped fellow contender, Matt Schnell with an impressive one-armed guillotine during a blistering opening round scramble.

Scoring his fourth promotional victory since his landing in the organization back in May 2020, Royval had previously bested Brazilian contender, Rogerio Bontorin with a split decision win at UFC Vegas 46 in January.

However, planning a possible future pairing against former champion, Brandon Moreno, or a rematch with Kai Kara-France off the back of his win against Schnell, Royval is now set to return to the drawing board, with the UFC set to host an interim title fight between Moreno and Kara-France in a UFC 277 rematch on July 30.

Current champion, Deiveson Figueiredo was initially targeted to meet with Moreno in a fourth straight fight between the two after he reclaimed the crown at UFC 270 back in January, however, is set to remain sidelined as he deals with a finger injury.

Speaking with Current MMA reporter, James Lynch after news of Moreno’s interim title showdown with common opponent, Kara-France in July, Royval explained how the booking of the interim clash disrupted his plans within the division.

“I think I was the one that broke that news – I was tryna break it,” Brandon Royval said. “It’s whatever, man – it kinda f*cks me over, honestly. It’s one of those like – what’s Figgy (Deiveson Figueiredo) doing anyways, man? I’m just like – whatever, man, it is what it is.”

“It kinda f*cks who I was gonna call out next,” Brandon Royval explained. “It kinda gave me nowhere to go with my call out, so that sucks. (Alexandre) Pantoja seems like he’s still on the injured list, so that doesn’t really give me the option to fight him, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to fight me next. It really does nothing for him. I wanna fight up, the last two guys I fought were ranked below me. I think I earned to fight up and kinda fight for a top-notch spot, and it kinda leaves the division in a hold. It’s kinda annoying too, man. But whatever, it is what it is.”

Brandon Royval already holds a stoppage win over the above mentioned, Kai Kara-France

Suffering stoppages loss to the aforenoted duo of Moreno and Pantoja, Royval, a former LFA flyweight champion landed in the UFC with a second round arm-triangle win over one-time division title challenger, Tim Elliott – before stopping the previously mentioned Kiwi, Kara-France with a second round guillotine on ‘Fight Island’ at UFC 253.
