Report – Cody Garbrandt vs. Rani Yahya Targeted For UFC on ESPN+ 67 On July 9.

    A bantamweight division matchup between former undisputed titleholder, weight class returner, Cody Garbrandt, and Brazilian grappling veteran, Rani Yahya is currently in the works to feature at a UFC Fight Night 209 event on July 9. – with a location or venue for the promotional showcase yet to be determined. 

    Without a victory in his last two straight outings, Cody Garbrandt, a former bantamweight champion, made his flyweight divisional bow back in December at UFC 269 – suffering a first round knockout defeat against Kai Kara-France. The loss came as Garbrandt’s fifth in his six most recent Octagon appearances.

    Yahya, 37, landed his second straight victory, on the other hand, most recently defeating Kang Kyung-ho at UFC Vegas 43 last November. Yahya has competed professionally since September 2002. News of Garbrandt’s targeted summer return against Yahya was first reported by MMA Fighting reporters, Mike Heck, Damon Martin, and Guilherme Cruz.

    Before his December knockout loss to Kara-France, Cody Garbrandt, a native of Ohio, suffered a unanimous decision loss to recent headliner, Rob Font in the main event of UFC Vegas 27 last May. 

    In his most recent professional victory, Garbrandt, who boasts a 12-5 professional record, managed to land a Knockout of the Year contender at UFC 250 in June 2020, stopping Raphael Assuncao with a stunning, buzzer-beating second round knockout. 

    A former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt managed to turn in a memorable challenger performance against former two-time division kingpin, Dominick Cruz to scoop the title with a unanimous decision win at UFC 207. 

    In a trio of subsequent knockout losses since assuming the throne, Cody Garbrandt dropped the title to former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw, before losing an immediate rematch, and then suffering a first round knockout loss to Pedro Munhoz.

    Garbrandt holds other UFC wins over Takeya Mizugaki, and Thomas Almeida to boot, as well as an Octagon debut win over Marcus Brimage. 

    28-10-1(1) as a professional Yahya, an alum of WEC, is the proud owner of a staggering 21 separate career submission victories – most recently stopping Ray Rodriguez with a second round arm triangle win in March of last year.

    Amongst his other notable career successes, Yahya, a native of Brasilia, and a third degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, has defeated the likes of Mark Hominick, Eddie Wineland, Mike Brown, Josh Grispi, Mizuto Hirota, Russell Doane, and Luke Sanders.
