An undisputed UFC featherweight title trilogy bout between defending division champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and the #1 ranked contender, former champion, Max Holloway is currently in the works for a UFC pay-per-view event in July – either UFC 276 on July 2. or UFC 277 on July 30.
As per an initial report from ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto, the promotion is working toward a third title fight between two-time opponents, Alexander Volkanovski, and Holloway next.
“There are talks of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway trilogy… sooner rather than later,” Okamoto tweeted. “Still talks right now, but both sides like the fight. A lot.”
Further reported by Ariel Helwani, a projected timeframe for the third title outing between the featherweight duo has been earmarked for July – at one of the two scheduled promotional pay-per-view events.
“UFC is targeting Alex Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 3 in July, sources say,” Helwani posted on Instagram. “First choice, at the moment, is July 2, but could be July 30, as well. Few moving parts on those two cards. But looking like that one goes down in July either way at this point.”
In the pair’s first outing, Holloway, the then-defending featherweight champion suffered a unanimous decision loss to challenger, Volkanovski in the co-main event of UFC 245 in December 2019.
Alexander Volkanovski holds two decision victories over Max Holloway
Rematching on ‘Fight Island’ in July 2021 at UFC 251, Holloway unsuccessfully attempted to pry the title back from Volkanovski in an immediate title rematch, with the New South Wales successfully defending his throne with a close split decision win.
In a pair of successful title knockbacks since, Volkanovski managed to secure a September unanimous decision win over Brian Ortega, before stopping Chan Sung Jung in the main event of UFC 273 just last month in Jacksonville, Florida.
Rebounding with a pair of dominant unanimous decision victories since his title challenge loss, Holloway defeated recent headliner, Calvin Kattar with a record-setting performance in Abu Dhabi, UAE – before besting Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Vegas 42 last November.
