Robert Whittaker Confirms Withdrawal From UFC 275 Battle With Marvin Vettori, Cites Injury

    Former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker has confirmed he is out of his scheduled June 11. return at UFC 275 against one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori in Singapore – citing an injury suffered earlier in camp.

    Robert Whittaker, who most recently featured in the main event of UFC 271 back in February of this year, suffered a close, unanimous decision loss to reigning middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya in the pair’s title rematch.

    Off the back of the loss, Whittaker soon booked a quickfire summer return against Trento native, Vettori, however, has since been forced to withdraw from the Singapore Indoor Stadium showcase, confirming he has suffered an injury setback.

    “Sorry to say guys due to an injury I took early in the camp I’m not able to compete in June,” Robert Whittaker tweeted. “I did everything I could to get it right but it’s not healing in time. All this means is that I’ll be back in the Octagon a couple of months later and I’ll be better than ever (fist emoji).” 

    Speculation began to mount yesterday afternoon that Whittaker’s return against Vettori was in jeopardy when the latter called for a short notice matchup against undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev, as well as once-scheduled opponent, Darren Till

    “We’re back at this,” Marvin Vettori tweeted. “I think I’m the on;y 185er that can say that has never pulled out of a fight but anyway smash boys I’ll get you back lets (sic) do it. I’m willing to die just show up. @KChimaev (Khamzat Chimaev) @darrentill2 @Mickmaynard2 @AliAbdelaziz00 @danawhite.”

    Before his championship challenge loss to Adesanya, Robert Whittaker had embarked on an impressive run of three straight wins since his first title unification loss to the former, besting the above mentioned, Till, expected next title challenger, Jared Cannonier, as well as one-time interim title chaser, Kelvin Gastelum.  

    At the time of publication, a replacement opponent for Vettori’s main card feature at UFC 275 has yet to be determined by the organization.

    UFC 275 takes place on June 11. from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore – with an undisputed light heavyweight title fight between champion, Glover Teixeira, and streaking contender, Jiri Prochazka slated to take main event honors.
