Attempting to secure a quickfire return to the Octagon following a main card outing against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 earlier this month, one-time welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has offered to fight Nate Diaz next – with an interesting striking caveat.

Burns, who featured on the main card of UFC 273 earlier this month in Jacksonville, Florida – suffering a close, unanimous decision loss to Chimaev, giving up his slot at the #2 ranked welterweight in the promotion – dropping down to #4, behind both Chimaev and Leon Edwards, and a sole space above teammate, Vicente Luque.

Initially suggesting and welcoming a five round rematch with Chimaev within the Chechen’s next three fights, Burns wants the AllStars MMA phenom to offer him the courtesy of a re-run of initially accepting the fight against him.

“The way I see it too, is that we’re (me and Khamzat Chimaev) not done,” Gilbert Burns said. “I do believe we’re not done. For sure, he moves forward in the rankings and they (the UFC) want to make that Colby (Covington) fight. But the way I see it, I’m not afraid to fight anyone in this division. Time and time again I’ve proved it. … I just want one thing back from Khamzat (Chimaev). I want the courtesy (of a rematch).”

“I was number two (in the rankings), and I fought number 11 – I want a rematch with Khamzat,” Gilbert Burns. If he beats Colby, he’s going to fight Kamaru (Usman) and I just want my rematch in his next three fights. I want my rematch, and I believe we’re not done, and one guy needs to get a finish. It’s just a fight that should’ve been five rounds. It should be more rounds and I think we kind of missed out a little bit on this fight.”

Gilbert Burns offers an interesting stipulation for a potential fight with Nate Diaz

Now over a week removed from the bout with Chimaev – who appeared to be lined up for a title-eliminator against Colby Covington, Burns has offered to fight the above mentioned Stockton veteran, Diaz next.

“I want a big fight – I know Nate Diaz needs an opponent,” Gilbert Burns told TMZ Sports. “I know that would be a crazy fight, I can put in the contract, ‘no takedowns attempted’ – just striking – just standup. I love that fight.”

Recently, Diaz – who infamously retains just a sole fight on his current UFC contract, has asked for his actual release from the organization, as well as publicly asking to feature on Scott Coker’s Bellator return to Hawaii later this month as he struggles to find activity on booking his next Octagon outing.
