Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion, Glover Teixeira has claimed that recent middleweight division newcomer, Alex Pereira is ready to fight current division kingpin, Israel Adesanya already, but insists his teammate will prove that himself during his upcoming UFC 277 affair with Sean Strickland.

Teixeira, the promotion’s current undisputed light heavyweight champion, saw his UFC 275 title defense against Jiri Prochazka on June 11. receive the UFC seal of approval yesterday, with the organization confirming the bout would headline a return to Singapore this summer.

The Minas Gerais native will attempt to secure the first successful defense of his title reign following his ascension to the throne in spectacular fashion last October with a second round rear-naked choke win over champion, Jan Blachowicz.

In what will prove to be a busy summer period for Teixeira, the Brazilian veteran is also set to serve in the corner of teammate, Alex Pereira in July at UFC 277, preparing the former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing champion for a high-stakes outing against the aforenoted streaking Strickland.

Alex Pereira improved to 5-1 professionally with his win over Bruno Silva earlier this month

To many’s surprise last week, the organization put together a pairing of Strickland, who currently occupies the #4 rank at middleweight, and Pereira, who is currently yet to crack the official middleweight top-15.

Landing in the UFC back in November at Madison Square Garden, Pereira made an instant impression with a second round flying knee knockout against Andreas Michailidis, before then returning with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over compatriot, Bruno Silva earlier this month.

Linked with a third combat sports pairing with the above mentioned, Adesanya due to the pair’s distinct kickboxing history, Teixeira has claimed Pereira is already primed for a title affair with the Nigerian-Kiwi.

“He’s (Alex Pereira) ready,” Glover Teixeira said during a recent interview with The Cornerman MMA. “He’s definitely working his ground, he’s improving every time. He has very good standup, very good at the distance and just a very mature fighter. I think he’s ready to fight (Israel) Adesanya right now. The next fight with Sean (Strickland), I think it’s going to be a great fight for Alex, and what he wants is to get there. To get there and fight.”

Pereira’s victory over Silva earlier this month spelt the snapping of a three-fight promotional-perfect tenure for the former Fight Nights Global kingpin, and Teixeira believes Pereira has already traversed the tougher opponent when Silva is compared to Strickland.

“I think Bruno (Silva) for sure is tougher than Sean Strickland, in my opinion,” Glover Teixeira said of Alex Pereira’s opponents. “Just the striking, he (Silva) hits very hard. I think Bruno for sure is tougher than Sean Strickland.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
