Former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has hit out at former interim welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington following the recent arrest of Jorge Masvidal – claiming fellow welterweights should blacklist Covington from now on and refuse to fight him.

Earlier this week, reports emerged detailing an alleged altercation between Masvidal and Covington outside Papi Steak restaurant in Miami Beach, Florida – with Covington suffering a fractured tooth and abrasion to his wrist following an alleged attack without notice from Masvidal.

As a result, Masvidal has since been arrested and booked in Miami Beach Police Department, where he was officially charged with felony status aggravated battery, and criminal mischief.

Held on a bond of $15,000, Masvidal was eventually released on bond, however, if convicted of charges pressed against him, may spend a period of 15 years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000.

During the alleged attack, Covington informed responding law enforcement officers that Masvidal has told him, “You shouldn’t have talked about my kids”.

Responding to Masvidal’s arrest and subsequent charging, former lightweight kingpin, the now-retired, Khabib has claimed that welterweights should refuse to fight Covington in the future now.

“If you are stronger than someone inside the Octagon, it does not mean that you can insult his children,” Khabib Nurmagomedov posted on his official Twitter. “No one has the right to insult someone’s family. Once you have gone down this path, then be ready to back up your words. You were attacked by (a) professional fighter, the same as you are, your own size, and you go press charges against him to the police?”

“I think all welterweights should refuse to fight Colby (Covington), just don’t accept fights with him, let him sit without a fight, it will probably significantly affect him and all fighters who even think of insulting families, who is provoking the fighters to look for someone in restaurants to deal with him,” Khabib Nurmagomedov continued.”

Whilst Covington, who press charges against Masvidal following the alleged attack after suffering injuries and an estimated damage in the region of $15,000 to a Rolex watch of his, has yet to respond to Khabib – the former lightweight champion’s arch-rival, Conor McGregor appeared to back Covington, insisting he would just move to the middleweight limit, as well as poking fun at Khabib’s past weight cutting issues.

“He’d (Colby Covington) just go up to middleweight cos (because) he’s not a fat fanny,” Conor McGregor replied in a now-deleted tweet.
