Former interim UFC welterweight champion, Colby Covington suffered a fractured tooth during an alleged physical altercation with recent opponent, Jorge Masvidal at a restaurant in Miami Beach, Florida on Monday, with the latter facing potential felony battery charges as a result.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, multiple reports detailed how Covington and Masvidal, past training partners at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida had been involved in a physical altercation outside Papi Steak in Miami Beach, with Masvidal alleged to have punched Covington on two occasions, before police responded to the scene of the alleged incident.
Per a police report obtained from The Miami Beach Police tonight by MMA Fighting reporter, Damon Martin, Masvidal has been named officially as a suspect in the alleged altercation, is currently facing potential felony battery charges as a result.
Arriving at the scene, Papi Steak, responding law enforcement officers spoke with Clovis native, Covington, who informed them that he had been “attacked by Jorge Masvidal.” Covington then explained how he had been exiting the establishment at around 11:30 p.m. ET after having dinner, alleging Masvidal “ran up to him from his left and without notice punched him with a closed fist two times in the face.”
The report obtained details how Covington was struck twice during the alleged incident, once in the mouth, resulting in a fractured tooth, and once in the left eye, with the Californian claiming Masvidal had said to him “You shouldn’t have been talking about my kids,” during the alleged altercation.
In the police report, Covington alleges that he had witnessed “three or four other unknown males” making their way toward him in what he described as an “aggressive manager”, leading to him returning “back into the Papi Steak restaurant, where he contacted police.”
Along with a fractured tooth suffered by Covington, the MMA Masters trainee is also alleged to have suffered an abrasion to his left wrist, and detailed that he had positively identified Masvidal by the sound of his voice, his hair which was sticking out of a hooded top which he had pulled up on his head, while his face was covered with a blue surgical face mask.
Covington and Masvidal headlined UFC 272 earlier this month at the welterweight limit, with Covington landing a unanimous decision victory over the former two-time title challenger over the course of five rounds.
