Report – Rose Namajunas vs. Carla Esparza II Targeted For UFC 274 On May 7.

    A strawweight championship rematch between reigning division champion, Rose Namajunas, and inaugural division titleholder, the #2 ranked strawweight contender, Carla Esparza is currently in the works to land at UFC 274 on May 7. – from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

    In their initial showdown back in December 2014, Esparza clinched the inaugural strawweight crown and The Ultimate Fighter 20 tournament win with a third round rear-naked choke win over finalist, Namajunas.

    In the midst of her second reign as undisputed strawweight champion, Namajunas landed the first successful defense of her second run as champion with a UFC 268 decision win over former champion, Zhang Weili in the pair’s November rematch.

    Undefeated in her last five, Torrance native, Esparza managed to stop recent UFC 272 feature, Yan Xiaonan with a dominant second round ground strikes win at UFC Vegas 27 last May. The victory earned Esparza Performance of the Night honors. News of Namajunas’ targeted May 7. rematch with Esparza was first reported by journalist, Alfredo Zullino.

    11-4 as a professional, Namajunas first landed the undisputed strawweight title with a stunning upset knockout win over common-foe, former champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk a UFC 217, before successfully defending the belt in an immediate title rematch.

    Dropping the championship at UFC 237 in Brazil, Namajunas suffered a slam knockout loss to Jessica Andrade, before avenging that loss with a unanimous decision triumph against the Brazilian with a unanimous decision win in July 2020.

    Challenging then-champion, Weili for spoils at UFC 261 in April of last year, Namajunas landed a shocking first round high-kick knockout win over the Hebei native with just over a minute elapsed in the first frame.

    18-6 as a professional, Team Oyama staple, Esparza dropped her undisputed title soon after her win over Namajunas, suffering a one-sided second round knockout loss to Jedrzejczyk at UFC 185.

    In the time since, Esparza has established an 8-3 record – suffering defeats to the trio of Randa Markos, Claudia Gadelha, and Tatiana Suarez – while managing wins over Juliana Lima, Maryna Moroz, Cynthia Calvillo, Virna Jandiroba, Alexa Grasso, Michelle Waterson, Marina Rodriguez, and the above noted Xiaonan.
