Undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has urged the #1 ranked contender, two-time opponent, Colby Covington to earn a third title challenge against him – urging him to fight the likes of Khamzat Chimaev, Gilbert Burns, and Vicente Luque.

Usman, who most recently headlined UFC 268 against Covington in November of last year, landed his second career win over the former interim welterweight champion – courtesy of a unanimous decision triumph at Madison Square Garden.

The defense came as Usman’s a fifth consecutively, following prior wins over both Covington and Jorge Masvidal, as well as a third round knockout win over Gilbert Burns.

Whilst he is yet to land his next outing, Usman is expected to feature at UFC 276 on July 2. against past opponent, the #3 ranked, Leon Edwards, having recently undergone surgery to address a ligament injury in his hand.

Off the back of his welterweight grudge match win against common-foe, Masvidal last weekend, Covington – who has already twice failed in his quest to mint himself as the undisputed division champion, called for a pairing with another past training partner, Dustin Poirier.

With options appearing limited for Covington as he looks to somehow earn a third pairing with Usman – the defending kingpin has urged him to remain active against the likes of Chimaev, Burns, or Luque next.

“There’s a couple of more fights you need to take on,” Kamaru Usman said of Colby Covington during a recent interview with ESPN MMA. “You haven’t fought Gilbert Burns, you haven’t fought Vicente Luque, you haven’t fought (Khamzat) Chimaev. Go out there and get a couple of wins.”

Recently confirmed by the organization, a welterweight matchup of the #2 rated, Burns and the undefeated Chimaev is slated to feature at UFC 273 on April 9. in a potential welterweight title-eliminator.

As for the streaking Luque, the Sanford MMA staple is slated to rematch past opponent, Belal Muhammad at UFC Vegas 51 in April.
