An intriguing middleweight matchup between former division champion, Robert Whittaker, and one-time title challenger, Marvin Vettori is currently in the works to land at UFC 275 on June 11. At the time of publication, an official location or venue for the event has yet to be determined by the organization, however, Singapore is the current frontrunner to host the event.
In a relatively quickfire return for former undisputed champion, Whittaker, the #1 ranked contender most recently featured in February against two-time foe, reigning division champion, Israel Adesanya – suffering a rematch unanimous decision loss.
For Vettori, the Trento native, also a two-time opponent of Adesanya, returned to the winning circle in an impromptu main event slot against Paulo Costa in November of last year, scoring a unanimous decision win the Brazilian in a Fight of the Year contender. Ariel Helwani was first to report the targeted matchup of Whittaker and Vettori.
Seeing his impressive three-fight winning run halted in his close decision loss to City Kickboxing mainstay, Adesanya last month – Whittaker had secured wins over the trio of Darren Till, Kelvin Gastelum, and incoming title challenger, Jared Cannonier to earn his rematch with Adesanya.
Over the course of his 10-year UFC tenure, Whittaker, a former interim and then undisputed middleweight champion holds wins over the likes of Brad Tavares, Uriah Hall, Derek Brunson, Ronaldo Souza, and Yoel Romero.
18-5-1 as a professional, Kings MMA standout, Vettori also holds a pair of losses to Adesanya – most recently headlining UFC 262 against the champion in June of last year.
His summer judging loss snapped a run of five consecutive wins since his first loss to the defending gold holder – having bested the likes of Cezar Ferreira, Jack Hermansson, and recent UFC 272 victor, Kevin Holland.
UFC 275 takes place on June 11. – with an undisputed light heavyweight showdown between reigning champion, Glover Teixeira, and challenger, Jiri Prochazka set to take main event honors. In the event’s co-headliner, flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko attempts her sixth successful title defense as she draws Brazilian striking sensation, Taila Santos.
