An intriguing lightweight pairing between the #5 ranked contender, Michael Chandler, and the former interim division champion, the #7 rated challenger, Tony Ferguson has been added to UFC 274 on May 7. The event is slated to take place at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Attempting to snap a two-fight losing run, Chandler, a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion suffered a unanimous decision loss to event headliner, Justin Gaethje at UFC 268 last November in the consensus Fight of the Year.
For Ferguson, the Oxnard veteran suffered losses in each of his last three Octagon walks – most recently at UFC 262 in May of last year, dropping a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Beneil Dariush. Sports Illustrated reporter, Justin Barrasso was first to report the slated pairing of Chandler and Ferguson.
Before his unanimous decision loss to Gaethje, Chandler had headlined the above mentioned, UFC 262 card against common-foe and UFC 274 headliner, Charles Oliveira – suffering an early second round knockout loss in a vacant lightweight title fight.
In his promotional debut at UFC 257 on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE in January of last year, Chandler exploded onto the UFC scene with a one-sided first round knockout win against upcoming UFC London co-headliner, Dan Hooker.
Ferguson, the #7 ranked contender at 155lbs, had enjoyed a division-tying 12-fight winning run prior to a short notice interim lightweight title fight against common-opposition, Gaethje in May 2020 – dropping a brutal, eventual fifth round knockout loss.
Also dropping a loss to the defending lightweight best, Oliveira, Ferguson co-headlined UFC 255 in November of that year en route to a one-sided unanimous decision loss to the Sao Paulo submission specialist.
UFC 274 takes place on May 7. from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona – with an undisputed lightweight title showdown between division champion, Oliveira, and the #1 ranked former interim titleholder, Gaethje booked to take main event honors.
