UFC featherweight contender, Yair Rodriguez has confirmed that he has held talks with the organization to land a summer fight against two-time title challenger, Brian Ortega in mid-June or July.

Rodriguez, the current #3 ranked featherweight contender, headlined UFC Vegas 42 last November against former undisputed champion, Max Holloway – dropping a unanimous decision loss in a high-stakes pairing which earned the pair Fight of the Night honors.

For Ortega, the Los Angeles native currently lies at #2 in the official featherweight pile – coming off an eventual unanimous decision loss to current champion, Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 in September in his second career loss and second unsuccessful tilt at featherweight spoils.

In the time since, Ortega and Rodriguez have been linked continually with a top-3 matchup between each other. And the latter has now confirmed that despite a sort of pact between the two to not fight until necessary, a pairing is currently in the works for the summer.

“I had discussed with Brian (Ortega), it was an unwritten agreement, that we would not fight unless it was necessary,” Yair Rodriguez said during an interview with ESPN Deportes reporter, Carlos Contreras Legaspi. “Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position where we have to fight against each other to reach the goal that we have, to become world champions.”

“I am happy to have the opportunity to face a great warrior like Brian Ortega, I am happy that more doors are opening thanks to the work that we have been able to show every time we get into the Octagon,” Yair Rodriguez continued. “And there is talk that the fight [between us], it could happen in mid-June or July, we know that anything can happen, those are the talks, nothing has been signed.”

Both dropping losses to the aforenoted #1 ranked former titleholder, Holloway, Rodriguez has managed to score notable UFC wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, B.J. Penn, Dan Hooker, Alex Caceres, and is the holder of a stunning, buzzer-beating upward elbow knockout win over incoming title challenger, Chan Sung Jung.

For Ortega, the wicked grappler also holds a career win over Jung, and enjoyed a seven-fight undefeated run in the UFC prior to his loss to Holloway back in December 2018. The LA-born contender has defeated the likes of Diego Brandao, Clay Guida, Renato Moicano, Cub Swanson, and common-opposition, former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar.
