A flyweight title fight between reigning division best, Valentina Shevchenko, and the surging #5 ranked contender, Taila Santos is currently in the works for UFC 275 on June 11. – with a location in Singapore currently leading the pack in a bid to host the pay-per-view event.
Attempting to land a whopping seventh successful defense of her flyweight throne, Shevchenko most recently secured her eighth consecutive victory with a fourth round ground strikes win over Lauren Murphy in the co-main event of UFC 266 back in September.
28-year-old Brazil native, Santos boasts a 19-1 professional record, most recently making short work of Joanne Wood with a first round rear-naked choke at UFC Vegas 43 back in November. The win earned Santos the #5 rank at 125lbs, and a Performance of the Night bonus. MMA Fighting reporters, Guillerme Cruz, and Damon Martin were first to report the targeted tie of Shevchenko and Santos.
22-3 as a professional, Shevchenko has embarked on an eight fight winning spree since her move to the flyweight ranks back in February 2018.
Landing in the division with a wholly one-sided ground strikes win over Priscila Cachoeira, the Kyrgyzstan native would then scoop the vacant title against former strawweight champion and past Muay Thai foe, Joanna Jedrzejczyk with a unanimous decision win.
Scoring six successful title knockbacks since, Shevchenko toppled Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche, Katlyn Chookagian, Jennifer Maia, Jessica Andrade, and the aforenoted Murphy as part of her roughshod run at flyweight.
Knockout ace, Santos, who has secured 10 separate strikes stoppages over the course of her nine-year professional career, has so far managed to win four of her opening five UFC bouts – with a sole career defeat coming courtesy of a split decision loss to Mara Romero Borella in her February 2019 organizational bow.
In four fights since, Santos, a native of Jaragua do Sol, has bested Molly McCann, Gillian Robertson, and sport pioneer, Roxanne Modafferi before her November stoppage win over Wood.
UFC 275 is set to take place on June 11. – with an undisputed light heavyweight title fight between division champion, Glover Teixeira, and the #2 ranked challenger, Jiri Prochazka set to headline the event.
