UFC president, Dana White appears to be considering adding BMF championship stipulations to this weekend’s UFC 272 headliner between former interim welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington, and symbolic belt holder, Jorge Masvidal.
Headlining this weekend’s pay-per-view event: a well-overdue grudge match between the #1 ranked, Covington, and the #6 rated, Masvidal – two former teammates and friends, turned bitter rivals.
For Covington, the outspoken Clovis native headlined UFC 268 back in November most recently, suffering a second career loss to common-foe, Kamaru Usman at Madison Square Garden.
As for Masvidal, the Miami native headlined UFC 261 back in April against Usman – dropping a shocking second round knockout loss to the Auchi native in his second unsuccessful pursuit of the undisputed welterweight crown.
Masvidal, a staple of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida – was then booked to feature on the main card of UFC 269 in December, in another bad-blood pairing with Leon Edwards, until an undisclosed injury ruled the former from the tie.
Without a victory since November 2019, when he landed a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Nate Diaz to become the inaugural symbolic BMF champion, Masvidal may put those spoils on the line at the T-Mobile Arena this weekend against Covington – per White, who appears to welcome the short notice inclusion of the spoils.
“You know, we did the BMF title as a one-time thing, it was fun when we did it,” Dana White said during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show. “But, yeah, you’re probably right. I probably should make that belt on the line when there isn’t a world title fight on the line. ‘Cause (Jorge) Masvidal has it, Masvidal has it. Where’s my crew? I don’t know, I don’t know – maybe we do (put the BMF title on the line at UFC 272). Maybe.”
Covington and Masvidal are set to close the show on Saturday in ‘Sin City’ – with a short notice reworked co-headliner officially confirmed by the organization this evening as former lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos draws replacement, Renato Moicano at a 160lb catchweight limit, over the course of five rounds.
