A high-stakes potential welterweight title-eliminator between the #2 ranked contender, Gilbert ‘Durinho’ Burns, and the undefeated #10 ranked challenger, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev is currently targeted to take place at UFC 273 on April 9. from the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
Rebounding to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since his 2019 welterweight division return, Niteroi native, Burns lodged a unanimous decision win over two-time title chaser, Stephen Thompson in the co-main event of UFC 264 back in July.
For Chimaev, the Chechen-born finisher featured on the main card of UFC 267 back in October on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE – cracking the welterweight top-10 with a one-sided first round rear-naked choke win over Li Jingliang. UFC president, Dana White confirmed the bout’s targeting as per TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter.
Prior to his July grappling-heavy decision win over Thompson, Brazil native, Burns headlined UFC 258 back in February of last year in an eventual third round knockout loss to former Sanford MMA training partner, defending welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman.
Before his title challenge loss to Usman, Burns had embarked on a four-fight winning run at 170lbs, besting Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia, and in a one-sided decision victory, overcame former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley.
10-0 as a professional, Chimaev, a native of Chechnya and trainee at AllStars MMA in Sweden, debuted in the UFC back in July 2020 – with a D’Arce choke win over John Philips.
Just 10 days later, Chimaev made the welterweight walk in a first round ground strikes win over debutante, Rhys McKee.
In September of that year, Chimaev stopped Gerald Meerschaert with a stunning 17-second one-punch knockout at UFC Vegas 11.
UFC 273 is slated to take place on April 9. – with a featherweight title fight between reigning champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and the #4 ranked, Chan Sung Jung booked to headline. The co-headlining bout will feature a bantamweight title unification rematch between Aljamain Sterling and interim gold holder, Petr Yan.
