Streaking UFC lightweight contender, Rafael Fiziev has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 272 rescheduled co-headliner this weekend against former division champion, Rafael dos Anjos, after returning a positive test for COVID-19.

Rafael Fiziev, who is undefeated in his last five straight outings, was scheduled to meet with dos Anjos originally in the main event of UFC Vegas 48 two weeks ago, until visa issues forced the cancellation of the bout with the Brazilian.

However, the pair were swiftly booked to co-headline UFC 272 in a five round bout beneath a welterweight pairing between Jorge Masvidal, and Colby Covington.

The impromptu co-main event has now, however, been shelved as per an initial report from Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, after Fiziev tested positive for COVID-19. At the time of publication, it is currently unknown if the promotion will book the fight for a third time, or elect to secure a short-notice replacement for Fiziev, which would keep dos Anjos on the UFC 272 card.

The Kyrgyzstan native most recently featured on the main card of UFC Vegas 44 back in December, stopping former training partner, Brad Riddell with a stunning third round wheel kick and strikes.

Fiziev lodged his fifth straight victory with the stoppage, following a prior slew of wins against recent UFC Vegas 49 headliner, Bobby Green, as well as Renato Moicano, Marc Diakiese, and Alex White.

For dos Anjos, the Niteroi veteran headlined UFC Vegas 14 in November 2020 – in another impromptu clash with the now-retired, Paul Felder, securing a one-sided split decision win over Philadelphia native in his return to the lightweight division.

A former lightweight champion, dos Anjos scooped the undisputed belt at UFC 185 in March 2015, before scoring his sole successful title defense in a first round knockout win against Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC Fight Night Orlando in December of that year.

UFC 272 is booked to take place on March 5. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – with a welterweight grudge match between the aforenoted, Masvidal and Covington slated to take main event status.
