Ahead of his premier headlining outing under the UFC banner this weekend, veteran lightweight contender, Bobby Green has claimed his foe, the #4 ranked, Islam Makhachev has less than an appealing fighting style to fans, and joked that he falls asleep whenever the grappling sensation competes.
Green, who clashes with Makhachev in the headlining slot of UFC Vegas 49, draws the Dagestan native on just 10 days’ notice in a 160lbs catchweight main event.
The San Bernardino native replaces the #3 ranked lightweight challenger, Beneil Dariush, after the Iranian-born grappler suffered a fractured fibula ahead of his pairing with Makhachev, forcing his withdrawal from the championship eliminator at 155lbs.
Replacing the Kings MMA mainstay, Green will attempt to both secure his third consecutive victory, and lodge a wholly massive upset victory over the American Kickboxing Academy feature, Makhachev.
Turning in a splendid striking showcase at UFC 271 earlier this month, Green managed to take home a unanimous decision win over Nastat Haqparast, which following a November knockout success against Al Iaquinta at Madison Square Garden.
Tasked with knocking back the Dagestan native, Green has engaged in some gamesmanship before the fight, claiming Makhachev obtains a “boring” style of fighting.
“Is he (Islam Makhachev) championship material?” Bobby Green asked assembled media during his UFC Vegas 49 media availability on Wednesday. “He’s been really downplaying me, and I’m going to keep it 100 for you: He’s a good opponent. I think he’s definitely – he’s been on this win streak. He is championship material is you’re talking about wins – if you’re talking about just wins. But I feel like when it comes to this MMA stuff, it’s just what product you’re selling… We’re all selling something, and the public is going to buy the best thing they can find.”
“With Islam, he does what he does,” Bobby Green continued. “But to be honest, it’s kind of boring. Even if he’s getting finishes, it’s still been boring. So my whole thing is entertainment, excitement. He can be championship material, but it’s just so f*cking boring. Nobody wants to see it. Nobody cares. I fall asleep watching his fights, then it’s, Oh, there’s the finish.’ They can show a bunch of finishes and it’s cool, but it was sleeping and boring and it’s lacklustre. For some of these guys, it’s just a match.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
Undefeated in his last nine consecutively, Makhachev turned in three successive submission victories in 2021, most recently landing a kimura win over Dan Hooker on the main card of UFC 267 back in October on ‘Fight Island’.
