Michael Bisping has claimed that short-notice replacement, Bobby Green has more than a puncher’s chance of defeating wrestling ace, Islam Makhachev at UFC Vegas 49 this weekend in the pair’s catchweight headliner – touting the California veteran’s striking as a distinct advantage ahead of the bout.
Green, who headlines his first event under the promotion’s banner since his February 2013 debut with the organization, makes a stunning turnaround on just 10 days notice, replacing the injured Beneil Dariush in a UFC Vegas 49 main event against the #4 ranked Makhachev.
Receiving the short-notice call, Green, who replaces Dariush after the Kings MMA staple suffered a fractured fibula, featured just two weeks ago on the main card of UFC 271, besting Nasrat Haqparast over the course of three rounds in an eye-catching unanimous decision-earning performance.
The victory came as Green’s second consecutively, off the back of a November knockout win over fellow division staple, Al Iaquinta at UFC 268 at Madison Square Garden.
Meeting Makhachev, Green is tasked with snapping the Dagestan native’s nine-fight winning spree, which includes a recent October submission win over Dan Hooker – stopping the Kiwi with a first round kimura in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Ahead of the main event bout, which is set to be contested at 160lbs, Green has received major props from former UFC middleweight champion, Hall of Fame inductee, and color commentator, Bisping, who touted Green’s striking as a possible catalyst to spring an upset victory.
“For Bobby Green to step up – what an opportunity, and by the way, let’s be honest, Bobby can win this fight,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “On the feet, Bobby is way better, simple as that. Islam (Makhachev) can strike, of course, he’s not a one-trick pony, he’s not just a wrestler, right? But he’s nowhere near as fast as Bobby Green. He’s nowhere near as slick. He hasn’t got the footwork either. Now, when it comes to wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu, I’ll give Islam the edge there.”
“He’s better, he’s better in that regard, but you gotta get him down,” Michael Bisping continued. “One thing we know about Bobby Green is the sprawl, he has a beautiful sprawl and really good takedowns, I doubt he will use it in the fight, it wouldn’t be smart to takedown Islam. Bobby needs to stay on the feet and put Islam on the back foot… Islam is great, we are all high on Isla, call me crazy, but I think there’s a good chance that Bobby Green might pull this off. There is also a very good chance Islam Makhachev takes him down and mauls him, but it won’t be that simple.”
During his run with the UFC, the 35-year-old San Bernardino native, has managed to secure victories against the likes of Jacob Volkmann, James Krause, Pat Healy, Josh Thomson, Erik Koch, Clay Guida, and Lando Vannata.
