Ahead of his undisputed UFC middleweight championship rematch with former division-best, Robert Whittaker this weekend at UFC 271, defending champion, Israel Adesanya is already weighing up future “fresh meat” matchups, as well as claiming a bout with Sean Strickland presents “big easy money” for him.

Adesanya, who originally met with Whittaker back in October 2019, stopped the Melbourne-born fan-favorite with a second round knockout to successfully unify the middleweight crowns.

The Nigerian-Kiwi then went on to score a trio of successful title knockbacks ahead of Saturday’s re-run with Whittaker, handing decision defeats to both Yoel Romero, and Marvin Vettori – sandwiched between a second round knockout win over the then-undefeated, Paulo Costa.

Along with this weekend’s title rematch between Adesanya and Whittaker, the promotion is also fielding a high-stakes potential title-eliminator between both Jared Cannonier, and Derek Brunson, with the victor expected to throw their name into the hat for a potential fight with either Adesanya or Whittaker in the future.

However, last weekend, the outspoken, aforementioned, Strickland called his shot for a middleweight title fight in his next outing – off the back of a split decision win over Jack Hermansosn in the main event of UFC Vegas 47.

The victory came as Strickland’s fifth consecutively under the promotion’s banner following prior notable wins over Uriah Hall, and Krzysztof Jokto, but the former admitted that he was less than happy with his own performance against Hermansson, claiming that he had let the pressure of securing his win bonus get the better of him.

Commenting on potential future opponents after he successfully made weight for UFC 271, Adesanya mentioned both the aforenoted, Cannonier, as well as Strickland, claiming that the latter would present a quite easy payday for him.

“I saw Jared (Cannonier) backstage,” Israel Adesanya said on the UFC pre-fight weigh-in show. “I said, ‘I like fresh meat’. And Sean (Strickland), that’s easy money. And also he talks a lot so that’s big money. That’s big easy money.” (H/T Chamatkar Sandhu)
