Ahead of his heated grudge match against former interim UFC welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington on March 5. at UFC 272 — two-time title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has released a video compiling clips of Covington, in a bid to show the real side of the Clovis native, labelling him the “real Street Judas”.
Masvidal, who was initially booked to make his first Octagon outing since April of last year at UFC 269 two months ago against another fierce rival, the #3 ranked, Leon Edwards, was forced from the main card bout due to an undisclosed injury in the weeks leading up to the bout.
In the time since, Masvidal has been booked to headline UFC 273 on March 5. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – taking on former friend and past American Top Team training partner, Covington.
The Miami native will return to the sport for the first time in 11 months, following a brutal second round one-punch knockout loss to common-opponent and reigning welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman at UFC 261 in April.
For Covington, the MMA Masters trainee also suffered defeat in his second outing against Usman back in November at UFC 268, dropping a unanimous decision loss against the Auchi native at Madison Square Garden.
With the rivalry between the two already exceeding boiling point in the months ahead of their long-overdue pairing, Jorge Masvidal released a video across his social media and on his official YouTube channel this week, in a bid to expose Covington as the “real Street Judas” – a moniker Covington had slapped on Masvidal since his departure from the Coconut Creek, Florida facility.
In the video, which is almost six minutes long and is backed by O Fortuna, early clips shows a compilation of Covington calling Jorge Masvidal his “best friend” in a series of interviews, before the Californian then labelled Masvidal at “piece of sh*t” and claims he wants to “end him”.
Later in the production, multiple fighters including former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, and former strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk – both past teammates of Covington, voice their displeasure with him.
For Covington, the Clovis native’s most recent victory came at UFC VEags 17 back in September 2020 – where he landed an eventual fifth round TKO win over former champion, Tyron Woole – who suffered a rib injury during a grappling scramble.
For Jorge Masvidal, the veteran Floridian’s most recent win came back in the form of a fourth round doctor’s stoppage TKO victory against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in November 2019 in New York.
