Talk about old-school matchmaking. According to multiple reports, a lightweight pairing between one-time division title challenger, Donald Cerrone, and veteran grappling maestro, Joe Lauzon is on deck for a UFC Fight Night event on April 30. At the time of publication, a location or venue for the event has yet to be determined by the organization.
Without a victory since May 2019, Cerrone is set to return to the lightweight division for the first time since his UFC Fight Night Ottawa victory over Al Iaquinta – having failed to find a win in five of his last outings.
Most recently, Cerrone featured against Alex Morono at the welterweight limit at UFC Vegas 26 in May, suffering a one-sided first round knockout loss. The stoppage by strikes came as the fourth from that sixth fight period.
For Lauzon, the 37-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace has yet to feature since a homecoming victory against Jonathan Pearce via strikes at UFC Fight Night Boston back in October 2019.
Colorado veteran, Cerrone had dropped a quarter of losses against former lightweight division champions, Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, and Tony Ferguson before his defeat to Morono back in May – which came off the back of an eventual official ‘No Contest’ against Niko Price.
Before his defeat to Ferguson, Cerrone had embarked on a three-fight winning spree – submitting formert Jackson-Wink MMA teammate, Mike Perry via a first round armbar, before finishing Alexander Hernandez with a patented high kick in a January 2019 Brooklyn outing.
Cerrone’s most recent win came against Iaquinta back in May 2019 in a main event slot, marking his twenty third under the promotion’s banner. Cerrone challenged for undisputed lightweight gold against then-champion, Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night Orlando in December 2015, suffering a first round knockout loss.
The owner of 17 separate submission victories across his storied career, The Ultimate Fighter 5 semi-finalist, Lauzon snapped a three-fight losing skid with his ground strikes win over Pearce back in Boston in October 2019.
Debuting in the UFC in September 2006, Lauzon stopped inaugural lightweight champion, Jens Pulver with a 48-second knockout – before landing more notable wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, Melvin Guillard, Jamie Varner, welterweight contender, Michael Chiesa, Takanori Gomi, and Diego Sanchez.
UFC Fight Night 208 is slated to take place on April 30. – with an official headlining bout for the event yet to be determined by the promotion.
