Ahead of his upcoming welterweight division return on March 5. at UFC 272, the charismatic, Kevin Holland has shared an interesting alleged altercation with former division title challenger, Nick Diaz, claiming the veteran attempted to punch him whilst drunk backstage at a UFC event.
Holland, who is winless in his last three consecutive outings, is slated to feature at UFC 272 in March – tackling Brazilian veteran, Alex Oliveira, who also enters the bout in the midst of a run of three outings without a win.
Last featuring in October on the main card of UFC Vegas 38 – Holland battled with Kyle Daukaus to an eventual official ‘No Contest’ at the middleweight limit, after the two clashed heads in the center of the Octagon prior to Daukaus latching onto a standing rear-naked choke.
In his most recent victory, Holland secured a record-setting knockout win over former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Jacare Souza, stopping the now-retired Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace with an innovative knockout off his back in the opening round.
For Diaz, the former WEC and Strikeforce middleweight champion made his first Octagon appearance since January 2015 in a September comeback at UFC 266, dropping a third round TKO via retirement loss to two-time foe and former undisputed welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler.
Briefly linked with a potential pairing against the Stockton fan favorite this year before booking his welterweight limit return against Oliveira, Holland reflected on a prior run-in with Diaz at a UFC event backstage – claiming the elder-Diaz sibling attempted to punch him.
“It was funny. I think he (Nick Diaz) was pretty sauced at the time though, so you know, it’s alright,” Kevin Holland said on The MMA Hour. “At the time, I used to be sponsored by this company named, Specimen, so I had this shirt one from Speicman, and he (Diaz) was like, ‘Hey, that’s my shirt.’ But I had walked past him and I was like, ‘Yo, what’s up, OG?’ I guess he probably thought somebody was coming up to him and fanboying over him, but I was talking to my coach, I call my coach, OG.”
“I guess he (Diaz) felt some type of way (about it),” Kevin Holland said. “And he said something, so I said something back. He said like, that was his shirt, he was like, ‘You got on my f*cking shirt,’ and I was like, ‘Bro, this ain’t your f*cking shirt, what’re you talking about? I was like, ‘Bro, you must be f*cked up.’ He was looking at me all crazy. Then, next thing I know he like, swung at me. F*ck no (he didn’t land). I’m the type of person you take down, not the type of person you hit in the face.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)
