Kattar had undoubtedly the best performance of last night’s card. There were plenty of questions surrounding the Boston boxer; if he could return to his old ways pre-Holloway. But winning as he did vs the massively hyped Giga Chikadze, we could see him up against a top 5 opponent next and having no problems getting his hand raised.
With many of the division already booked up or injured, fighters like Brian Ortega, who also suffered a battering against Holloway seems like a logical next step. There may be fellow power puncher Josh Emmet in the short future, who’s similarly ranked, or maybe a wildcard of Dan Hooker next, who looks to return back to the Featherweight division soon. However, Hooker has recently been linked to a fight against Arnold Allen.
After aiming for a title fight in March against Volkanovski, Chikadze suffered the biggest loss of his career this weekend. Before the fight, Giga held the number eight ranking, and will probably drop just one step in replace of Dan Ige, but likely no further as Barboza sits at number ten, who Chikadze has recently beaten. Ige is one of the few available fighters around a similar ranking, and himself is coming off a loss, so that’s a matchup that the UFC may look to put together next.
One of the more inconsistent fighters on the card, Jake is still looking to escape his one-win one-loss repetitive record since joining the UFC. But with a round one submission against Chase Sherman, it was enough to keep fight fans happy, especially considering how poor this card was before the main event. While a way off making any real noise in the heavyweight division just yet, his next step will be wanting to start a winning streak and climb the ladder.
The Vanilla Gorilla has failed to make a lasting impression in his two stints in the UFC. Being 1-6 in his last 7 UFC fights, it’ll be hard for Sherman to stay attached to the competitive fight organisation. But losing in the way that he did, it may be doubtful that we see him in the octagon much longer, unfortunately.
Titled as one of the more entertaining fighters on the roster, flyweight Brandon Royval overcame a scrappy win against Rogerio Bontorin to keep him in the top 5 bracket of the division. But with the surrounding competition all having matchups or having fought Brandon recently, it may be a case of sitting out and waiting to fight the loser of the upcoming title fight next week.
The ‘Blonde Fighter’ is in one of the more peculiar cases in the UFC. Clearly being one of the better fighters in her division, she still is a world apart from the champ, Valentino Shevchenko. But with the win over Jennifer Maia this weekend being the last of her current UFC contract, could we see the number two ranked flyweight sign again with the UFC, or will she explore her opportunities elsewhere?
