Report – Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan II Moved To UFC 273 On April 9.

Initially targeted to co-headline UFC 272 on March 5. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – the bantamweight title unification rematch between champion, Aljamain ‘Funk Master’ Sterling, and interim gold holder, Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan has been moved to the UFC 273 card on April 9. – where it will also take co-headlining status.

Earlier this week, reports suggested a pairing between Sterling and Yan, which had been targeted for UFC 272, would be moved a month further to UFC 273 on April 9. – with reasons for the reworking of the bout undisclosed currently. Ariel Helwani was first to report the relocation of Sterling vs. Yan II.

Initially meeting back in March of last year as part of a title tripleheader at UFC 259, Sterling clinched the undisputed bantamweight championship courtesy of a fourth round disqualification against then-champion, Yan, after the Russian landed an illegal knee whilst Sterling was deemed a downed fighter. Sterling became the first champion to win a UFC title via disqualification as a result.

Expected to co-headline UFC 267 back in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Sterling was ruled from proceedings after he failed to obtain medical clearance to compete after invasive surgery to address a longstanding neck injury.

As a result, an interim title was introduced to the division, with Dudinka technician, Yan defeated common-foe, short notice replacement, Cory Sandhagen via a unanimous decision to setup a title unification bout with the Uniondale native, Sterling.

In the midst of a six-fight winning run including his disqualification win over Yan, Sterling, who trains alongside former UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra at Serra-Longo MMA in New York – as well as Eric Nicksick at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas – also holds wins over the aforenoted, Sandhagen, Pedro Munhoz, and Brett Johns during his current streak.

Winning the vacant bantamweight championship as part of another tripleheader of championship clashes at UFc 261 back in July of 2020, Yan defeated former featherweight champion with a volley of fifth frame ground strikes.

UFC 273 takes place on April 9. – with a location or venue for the event yet to be determined by the organization. A featherweight title fight between reigning champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and the #4 ranked challenger, Chan Sung Jung will headline the event.
