A featherweight championship clash between promotional-perfect champion, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski, and the #4 ranked contender, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung will take main event status at UFC 273 on April 9. At the time of publication, the promotion is yet to secure an official venue or location for the showcase.

New South Wales native, Volkanovski is set to attempt to lodge his third successful defense of his featherweight crown against Jung, after a recently targeted UFC 272 main event trilogy bout with Max Holloway fell to the wayside last week.

For Jung, the Busan veteran will attempt to clinch featherweight gold at the second time of trying – most recently rebounding to the winner’s enclosure with a unanimous decision main event victory over Dan Ige at UFC Vegas 29 in June. Ariel Helwani was first to report the pairing of Volkanovski and Jung.

Per a report from MMA Fighting reporter, Damon Martin, despite initially outlining a Barclays Center hosting in Brooklyn, New York – the UFC are now attempting to secure a venue in Florida for the April 9. pay-per-view event, possibly in a return to Jacksonville.

Most recently headlining UFC 266 back in September of last year, Australian technician, Volkanovski turned in a Fight of the Year contender against challenger and common-foe, Brian Ortega to successfully defend his featherweight crown.

Before his unanimous judging win over Ige, South Korean striker, Jung dropped a rather one-sided unanimous decision loss to Ortega in October 2019 – snapping a two-fight winning run following knockout triumphs against both Renato Moicano, and former lightweight titleholder, Frankie Edgar.

Jung first challenged for UFC featherweight spoils back in August 2013 at UFC 163 against then-champion, Jose Aldo in the champion’s native Brazil dropping a fourth round knockout loss after suffering a shoulder injury. Jung would later serve in the South Korean military as part of the country’s conscription policy before a return in February 2017.
