Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan II Slated For UFC 272 on March 5.

    A bantamweight title unification rematch between reigning champion, Aljamain ‘Funk Master’ Sterling, and former undisputed champion and current interim gold holder, Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan is headed for UFC 272 on March 5. – from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

    Initially meeting back in March at UFC 259 as part of a championship tripleheader, Sterling became the first champion in promotional history to win a title via disqualification, after Yan landed an illegal knee in the fourth round to a downed Sterling.

    In the time since. Yan saw his UFC 267 title rematch with Sterling shelved after the champion failed to obtain medical clearance to compete amid recent surgery to address a longstanding neck issue.

    As a result, Yan remained on the Abu Dhabi, UAE card in October – taking home an interim bantamweight title with an impressive unanimous decision victory over common-opposition, Cory Sandhagen. ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto first reported the news of the rematch between the two as per UFC president, Dana White.

    In the midst of a six-fight winning run, Uniondale native, Sterling managed to earn his March title challenge against Yan courtesy of a stunning opening round rear-naked choke win over the above mentioned, Sandhagen at UFC 250.

    Amongst his other victories during his UFC tenure, Sterling has defeated Pedro Munhoz, Cody Stamann, Brett Johns, Jimmie Rivera, Renan Barao, and Takeya Mizugaki. 

    Dudinka native, Yan, who boasts a 16-2 record, suffered his first promotional loss with his disqualification against Sterling back in March.

    Prior to the defeat, the former ACB titleholder managed to scoop the vacant bantamweight title with an eventual fifth round grounds strikes knockout win over former featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo. Yan also holds a victory over common-foe, Rivera, as well as former title challengers, Urijah Faber, and John Dodson.

    UFC 272 is slated to take place on March 5. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – with a featherweight title trilogy bout between reigning champion, Alexander Volkanoski, and former champion, Max Holloway booked to boot.
