Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos appears to be targeting an Octagon return for February incoming. And has sights on scoring a rematch with former interim division titleholder, Tony Ferguson at UFC Vegas 48.
dos Anjos, who returned to the lightweight limit back in November of 2020, scored a one-sided split decision win over the now-retired, short-notice opponent, Paul Felder – snapping a two-fight losing skid at welterweight.
The Niteroi native, who recently underwent an arthroscopy procedure on his knee, which saw him withdraw from a UFC 267 reworked pairing with the surging, Islam Makhachev, sits at #6 in the official lightweight pile off the back of his win over Philadelphia native, Felder – one slot above past opponent, Ferguson.
Initially meeting back in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 in Mexico City back in November 2016, Ferguson handed former undisputed lightweight champion, dos Anjos his second consecutive loss in the form of an impressive unanimous decision victory.
dos Anjos had also claimed recently that the promotion had initially offered him a rematch against Ferguson for May of last year at UFC 262, which he rejected as he attempted to recover from another injury.
“It was in May, then Beneil (Dariush) took the fight (with Tony Ferguson),” dos Anjos said. “Benny Dariush took the fight. That fight was supposed to be me (and Ferguson), but I couldn’t get better. And then I say, ‘Hey, I’m gonna pass the ball’.“
“(Tony Ferguson) would be a good rematch,” dos Anjos said. “I fought Tony on (sic) the wrong time. I should not have taken that fight. I would love to run that match again.“
Posting on his official Twitter last night, dos Anjos appears to have now identified a specific date that suits him for a rematch with past foe, Ferguson, suggesting the two should feature at UFC Vegas 48 which takes place on February 19.
“@TonyFergusonXT do you have plans for February 19?” dos Anjos tweeted. “I gave @ufc (the) green light on my end.”
Neither refusing the pairing nor appearing to welcome it, Ferguson replied, and claimed he would check his availability with his secretary.
“Ahhh hahhhhhh a fellow chucka’ let me check with my secretary please hold,” Ferguson tweeted. “Laaaa daaaa dahhhhhh…. dahhh daaa dahhhhh. Duuuu duuuuuuuuuuuuu dooooooooo – CSO –”
Sitting at #7 in the official lightweight rankings, Oxnard veteran, Ferguson will attempt to snap a three-fight losing run in his next Octagon walk, after most recently suffering a unanimous decision defeat to Beneil Dariush at UFC 262 in May.
