UFC president, Dana White has lauded promotional color commentator, Joe Rogan for helping build and bring notice to the sport of mixed martial arts, during his lengthy tenure in the sport.
Rogan, who has served as the promotion’s color commentator for the majority of its events since his 1997 roving reporter and commentator debut, has taken a notable back step away from the commentary booth in recent years since the organization’s sale back in 2016 – taking duty for mostly pay-per-view events in North America.
Whilst the former Fear Factor host, podcaster, and standup comedian has received his major share of flak recently for his ability as a color commentator and his knowledge of the evolution of the sport, promotional president, White claimed that nevertheless, the 54-year-old deserves massive praise for building the sport and educating the masses.
“Another guy who deserves a ton of credit for helping build this sport during our era is Joe Rogan,” White said during a recent appearance on THE Fight with Teddy Atlas. “The reality is that when we got into this, everybody understood standup fighter no matter what happened. Punching, kicking, elbows – we all get that. The big thing for us when it goes to the ground, how many people are really going to understand what’s going on and what they’re seeing?”
“Because if you’ve never done Jiu-Jitsu, you don’t know what the hell they’re doing. … Joe Rogan was, first of all, passionate about the sport, No. 1, (and) No. 2, so good at walking through what was going on before it even started to happen,” White continued. “To have a guy like him behind the mic, he was very instrumental in helping build the sport.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
Rogan, who has managed to attend just six events this year, serving as a color commentator for the organization, also received major praise from White recently, who explained how he had consulted The Joe Rogan Experience podcast host, as he attempted to deal with the symptoms of COVID-19 after he tested positive earlier this month.
