Dan Hooker Welcomes Featherweight Return, Targets Clash With Chan Sung Jung

UFC lightweight contender, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker has fueled speculation regarding his return to the promotion’s featherweight limit, as well as noting his interest in scoring a division return against one-time title chaser, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung.

Hooker, who has suffered three losses in his last four Octagon appearances, last featured on the main card of UFC 267 back in October — suffering a short notice first round kimura defeat against the #4 ranked challenger, Islam Makhachev.

In his most recent victory, Hooker returned to the winner’s enclosure and snapped a two-fight losing skid back in September at UFC 266 — nabbing an impressive, grappling-heavy unanimous decision success opposite Hamburg-born prospect, Nasrat Haqparast.

Hooker, a staple of City Kickboxing had previously suffered a huge opening round knockout loss to promotional newcomer, Michael Chandler at UFC 267 in January of this year, which followed a unanimous decision loss to former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier at UFC Vegas 4 in June of last year.

Hinting at a potential return to the featherweight division — a weight-class he has competed in on six separate occasions in the UFC prior to his lightweight climb, Hooker made a successful test cut to the featherweight limit, coming in at 146lbs over last weekend with the brief help of a dietician from the UFC Performance Institute whilst he stays in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Claiming that it’s a “real possibility” that he returns to the featherweight limit for his next Octagon walk, Hooker also appears to have set sights on South Korean standout, Jung for his divisional return.

Head and shoulders, the number one guy that I would love to get in there would be ‘The Korean Zombie’ [Chan Sung Jung],” Hooker told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I would love to throw down with the zombie.

So, I don’t know what the people were saying, that’s why I just put it out there, stepped on the scale, made the weight, and I feel like you just let the people decide,” Hooker explained. “Whoever the people want to see me in there against will kind of convince the UFC. What everyone wants, everyone can get, but for me, it would be head and shoulders, ‘The Korean Zombie’.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Himself recently returning to the winner’s enclosure following a one-sided unanimous decision loss to recent title challenger, Brian Ortega in October of last year, Jung managed to knock back the surge of Dan Ige with a unanimous judging victory of his own in June at UFC Vegas 29. The victory saw Jung retain his slot within the featherweight top-5.
