Aljamain Sterling Claims He’s Going To ‘Strangle’ ‘Dirty Weasel’ Petr Yan Ahead Of Rematch

Current UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain ‘Funk Master’ Sterling claimed he will “strangle” recently minted division interim titleholder, Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan ahead of the pair’s expected championship unification rematch next year, as well as labeling the Dudinka native a “dirty weasel“.

Sterling, who clinched the undisputed bantamweight crown back in March of this year, became the first champion in the history of the organization to win the title off the back of a disqualification, after defending gold holder, Yan landed a fourth round illegal knee to a downed Sterling — leaving the latter unable to continue.

In the time since, Sterling underwent a surgical procedure on his neck to address a lingering issue dating back to his amateur wrestling days. However, Sterling was denied medical clearance to compete at UFC 267 last month in a title rematch against Yan — resulting in the introduction of an interim title.

Russian standout, Yan would go on to take co-headlining honors at the Abu Dhabi, UAE event against common-foe, Cory Sandhagen — handing the Aurora native his second consecutive loss in the form of a unanimous decision defeat over the course of five rounds.

Immediately, Sterling and Yan were once more on a collision course to finally attempt to settle their heated rivalry next year in a title unification match, with the former outlining an end-of-first-quarter return from his sidelining as he deals with nerve issues and muscle loss post-surgery.

Uploading footage of him grappling at his native Serra Longo Martial Arts, Sterling catches onto a triangle submission, posting the transition on his official Twitter, accompanied by the caption, “I’m going to strangle that dirty weasel” referring to interim champion, Yan.

Sterling then posted late last night detailing how he had suffered a rather sizeable laceration to his lower lip, courtesy of a knee during another grappling practice, before enquiring if he required medical attention.

Stitches or nah?” Sterling tweeted. “Very first roll of the night. Courtesy of… you guessed it! Another knee to the face! I really don’t knee’d (sic) this right now!

Scoring three stitches to close the laceration to his lip, Sterling joked that his latest injury would set him back all the way to 2023. “3 stitches,” Sterling posted. “Good as new. Doc [Doctor] says [I’ll] be back in 2023.

The 32-year-old Uniondale native is currently in the midst of a six-fight undefeated run, which includes his disqualification win over Yan, a pair of submission successes against Cody Stamann, and the aforenoted, Sandhagen, as well as judging triumphs opposite Brett Johns, Jimmie Rivera, and Pedro Munhoz.
