Alexander Volkanovski Favors Max Holloway To Beat Yair Rodriguez: ‘His Pressure Will Be Too Much’

Reigning undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski has backed former two-time opponent, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway to defeat the #3 ranked challenger, Yair ‘El Pantera’ Rodriguez ahead of their upcoming UFC Vegas 42 main event this weekend.

Volkanovski, 2-0 as the undisputed featherweight champion — holds a pair of judging victories over the aforenoted former featherweight best, Holloway, and most recently lodged a unanimous decision triumph against Brian Ortega in the main event of UFC 266 back in September.

The New South Wales native is likely to pull his next opponent from the headliner this weekend at the UFC Apex facility between Holloway and Rodriguez. And is currently backing Holloway to get one over the Chihuahua native — likely setting up a trilogy bout between him and Holloway.

Max Holloway,” Volkanovski said when speaking about who he favors to emerge victoriously with reporter, James Lynch. “I think Max Holloway will be too much, too much pressure. Yair [Rodriguez] likes to fight on the outside and again, he’s the type of guy, you give him room to move, you stand in front of him and let him work at a range he’s comfortable at, mate, he looks like an absolute weapon.

But you take that away from him [Yair Rodriguez], then obviously he has to try and think on the fly a little bit and that’s not really (his strength). So, the pressure that Max will bring will definitely make it hard for Yair.” (H/T MMA News)

In his most recent outing, Holloway set multiple striking records in the main event of UFC on ABC 1 in January on ‘Fight Island’ — besting Calvin Kattar over the course of five rounds in a unanimous decision win.

As for Rodriguez, the Mexico native has been out of action since October 2019 where he earned Fight of the Night honors in tandem with Jeremy Stephens in the pair’s rematch in the co-headliner of UFC Fight Night Boston.
