Justin Gaethje Believes Conor McGregor Will Take ‘Favorable’ Fights In His Comeback

Ahead of his upcoming Octagon return at UFC 268 on November 6. — former interim lightweight champion, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje has put the kibosh on a potential matchup opposite former two-weight gold holder, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor — claiming that the Dubliner will only take “favorable matchups” from here on out.

Gaethje, who is set to snap 13-months of inactivity in the Octagon — returns in a massive, high-profile lightweight showdown opposite recent promotional newcomer and one-time vacant title challenger, Michael Chandler at UFC 268 at Madison Square Garden on November 6.

The matchup will come as Arizona native, Gaethje’s first since a headlining tilt opposite Khabib Nurmagoemdov back at UFC 254 in October of last year on ‘Fight Island’ — where he suffered a defeat in the second round as Nurmagomedov successfully unified the lightweight titles.

Losing his first outing following a stunning run of four separate knockout victories, Gaethje stopped the quartet of James Vick, recent headliner, Edson Barboza, future Hall of Fame inductee, Donald Cerrone, as well as former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 back in May of last year to clinch his own interim crown.

Speaking with ESPN MMA recently ahead of his incoming return, the ONX Labs trainee and Trevor Wittman product claimed that he had earmarked a future showdown with McGregor should he scale the hurdle presented by Nurmagomedov. However, the Dubliner’s recent tibia fracture paired with three losses in his last four Octagon walks have scuppered that pairing in Gaethje’s mind.

In my mind, the ultimate goal was to beat Khabib (Nurmagomedov) and then Conor (McGregor) and that was worth the risk, so that was what I chose,” Gaethje said. “But (a fight with McGregor) could have been a possibility then maybe, but I’d say the chances are zero percent (now).

As far as Gaethje is concerned, he believes McGregor, who revealed recently that he has just two fights remaining on his current UFC contract, will only take “favorable matchups” against the likes of Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.

I don’t think he’ll (McGregor) fight, if once or twice (more), and it won’t be guys like me,” Gaethje explained. “It’ll be guys like Nate Diaz, Jorge Masvidal, you know, favorable matchups.

While Gaethje is penciled in for a pairing opposite Chandler in two months’ time, 33-year-old Crumlin native, McGregor is still expected to be sidelined until next year as he continues the recovery process following a recent surgical procedure to address a fractured tibia suffered in his July loss to common-foe, Dustin Poirier.
