Last weekend, Jiri Prochazka continued his burst onto the scene, winning his second UFC fight by yet another devastating KO. This one was over former title challenger, Dominic Reyes, and it was done via a spinning back elbow that will contend for the knockout of the year in 2021.
The fight placed Jiri at #2 in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings. He was also told that he’ll be next in line for a title shot, after Glover Teixeira gets his chance in September against Jan Blachowicz. However, this could mean that Jiri is out of action for the remainder of the year, waiting on the sidelines.
Aleksandar Rakic on the other hand holds a record of 14-2, ranked #3 and wants to get back in there before then. He believes that Jiri would be waiting too long to fight for the belt, and a title eliminator between the two should take place, to determine who should truly be next in line.
Speaking to Farah Hannoun of MMA Junkie, Rakic discussed his feelings towards last weekends unfoldings:
“This fight makes sense against Jiri,” Rakic told MMA Junkie. “The result that happened on Saturday is the best thing that could happen to me. This wakes my attention, my motivation. I need now to be more motivated, to go back to the gym, to train harder and harder.”
“The result: it’s the best thing that happened to me. I’m so motivated and I’m so excited. This fight against Jiri now makes the most sense. Like you said, Glover will fight Jan in September. Who else is going to fight Jiri?”
Jan Blachowicz vs Glover Teixeira is set to take place on September 4th. By that time, we will see whether anyone else has positioned themselves for a shot. Another possible outcome is either Rakic or Jiri being an alternate for the next title shot, encase anything happens to either fighter before September 4th.
