Last night, news broke that former UFC Lightweight Champion, Anthony Pettis, had departed from the UFC, and will test his free agency. This came after he extended his win streak to two, with a win over Alex Morono last weekend.
Naturally, ‘Showtime’ was linked to Bellator, and with his brother Sergio already being on the roster, it’s a strong possibility. Bellator President, Scott Coker, was asked about the potential signing of Pettis, who most recently competed at Welterweight. This led to asking his thoughts on a match up between Anthony Pettis and Michael ‘Venom’ Page.
“(Pettis vs. ‘MVP’) would be a lot of fun,” Coker told MMA Junkie. “That would be amazing. We’ll see. There’s only so many slots on TV for us. We’ll be having 22 to 26 fights (in 2021), and it’ll all be mapped out sometime in the next three weeks and we’ll figure it out. We’ll have a conversation and see where it goes.”
Coker also stated that he’s sure his team are already in advanced talks with ‘Showtime’ and that the main deciding factor is how much value they believe is left of his career.
“Really it’s like, how much does he have left in the gas tank? But we’ll definitely have that conversation, and we usually have that conversation with every free agent, whether we sign them or not. We’ll probably do the same thing with Pettis if we haven’t already done it.”
