Stephen Thompson is no stranger to UFC title shots. Back in 2016 and 2017, he came about as close as you can to winning the gold. He faced Tyron Woodley for the belt twice, with the first bout being a draw and losing a decision the second time around.
Since then, he struggled to find the form that he had once enjoyed, with losses to Anthony Pettis and Darren Till. But this past weekend, ‘Wonderboy’ defeated Geoff Neal at UFC Vegas 17 by unanimous decision, extending his win streak to two.
Before his bout, in an interview with ‘The Schmo’, Thompson discussed what would be next for him with a win over ‘Handz of Steel’.
“What does a victory over Geoff Neal do for you, Wonderboy? The Schmo asked. “Where does it put you in the upper echelon of the fight game?”
“We all know Geoff Neal is a tough and big Welterweight.” Wonderboy responded. “A good win over him, they got to be putting me up against somebody in the top five next. So, not giving up on the title and in 2021, I’m going to be champ.”
After the bout, Thompson had his next opponent on the tip of his tongue, asking for a rematch with the ‘BMF’, Jorge Masvidal. A fight that Thompson won by decision, back in 2017. It’s also a fight that Masvidal has openly expressed a key interest in running back.

As Thompson alluded to, Masvidal is current rumored to be facing Colby Covington next. But nothing is official, and with ‘Gamebred’ ranked #4 and Thompson ranked #5 at the time of writing this, there are a few options at Welterweight.
