Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will be looked at by many fans as the one that got away. They were most recently scheduled to fight in 2020, but then the Coronavirus hit and caused the fight to once again fall apart.
Tony Ferguson ended up fighting Justin Gaethje for the interim title. Ferguson lost, ending a 12 fight win streak and it was Gaethje that wound up fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov. After which, Khabib retired from the sport, leaving the division wide open.
Tomorrow night, Tony Ferguson returns to face Charles Oliveira, who is currently on a seven fight win streak of his own. When asked about what’s next for the Lightweight title, Dana White provided an update.
“Charles said that he thinks a win here, he could fight for a title.” John Morgan said. “Obviously Tony’s been around. Are you looking at this as title implications?”
“Listen, either guy that wins this fight could be in a title fight, yeah.” Dana White responded.
“Are there any updates on the Lightweight title?” John Morgan asked. “Have you had your meeting with Khabib yet? Have you talked to him? Do we know what the future of the Lightweight division is?”
“I’m meeting him next month.” Dana White responded.
