After Islam Makhachev pulled out of his main event slot against Rafael Dos Anjos this weekend, RDA has been desperate to find another opponent. He was open to many options, but singled out UFC newcomer, Michael Chandler.
Chandler stated that he had other plans, and was not going to drop them for a last minute fight against the former Champion. A few fighters were open to the bout, but according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, UFC Lightweight and commentator, Paul Felder has stepped in on just five days notice:
Per UFC officials, none other than Paul Felder (@felderpaul) is stepping in on FIVE DAYS notice to fight Rafael dos Anjos. STILL a five round fight. STILL 155 pounds. Wow.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) November 9, 2020
There is a bit of a backstory here, as RDA holds two wins over Felders close teammate and friend, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. Cerrone came close to UFC gold, but was knocked out by RDA in their last outing, and achieving UFC gold is one of the few things he didn’t do in his career.
Now Felder, who was contemplating retirement, will have a chance to avenge one of his mentors and get back in the win column.
