After getting through his first three UFC fights in the space of a few weeks, Khamzat Chimaev didn’t have a scratch to show for it. He finished all three of his opponents, most recently with a 17 second KO win.
The UFC initially had discussed matching him up with Demian Maia next, but after such dominant displays, it seemed they had bigger plans for him. Chimaev himself stated that he is two fights away from a UFC title shot.
After struggling to find an opponent, number three ranked Welterweight, Leon Edwards signed on the dotted line. Edwards is on an 8 fight win streak, and previously felt like Chimaev was nowhere near deserving of a fight against him. However, after a long lay off and the threat of being removed from the rankings, he agreed to face Chimaev in December.
Ordinarily, you’d expect a fighter who’s been in the UFC for just a few months to be an underdog to an opponent who is on an 8 fight win streak, with his last loss coming to the now Champion, Kamaru Usman back in 2015. But in this case, Khamzat Chimaev is a -180 favourite over the Englishman, in what may come as a surprise to many.
