After a short hiatus, Dana White’s Contender Series has returned to the Apex. Featuring four bouts, headlined by Light Heavyweight prospects, Carlos Ulberg and Bruno Oliveira.
Four fights, four knockouts. The night seen Dana White hand out four UFC contracts, after a fantastic display of skills across the board. Also in attendance was Middleweight Champion, Israel Adesanya who was cornering his team mate and headliner, Ulberg.
Carlos Ulberg def. Bruno Oliveira via 1st round KO.
A lot of pressure on Ulberg’s shoulders, and his opponent was willing to push the pace. But he would not be denied, landing a beautiful 3 punch combo on the counter attack. Oliveira was left belly down and completely out. A quick and impressive night at the office for Carlos Ulberg.
Carlos Ulberg earned a UFC contract.
Ignacio Bahamondes def. Edson Gomes via 2nd round KO.
Both fighters had a record of finishing most of their opponents, and they came in looking to add another KO to the list. Gomes was game, and clearly had heavy hands, but it was the technique and versatility from Bahamondes’ that gave him an advantage. After some back and forth, Gomes ate a huge front kick that left him unconscious for an extended period of time, in one of the best KOs of the year.
Ignacio Bahamondes earned a UFC contract.
Luis Saldana def. Vince Murdock by 3rd round TKO.
A Featherweight clash with a sizeable height difference. Saldana is big for the weight class, standing at 5’11”. Whereas Murdock is just 5’6”. Murdock fights out of Team Alpha Male, which is one of the top gyms in the world, particularly for the smaller weight divisions. It’s produced fighters such as Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber, Cody Garbrandt, TJ Dillashaw and many more. Saldana showed excellent use of his size, by mixing up his striking from distance and controlling the pace of the fight. Going into the third round, it was looking like Saldana would cruise to a comfortable decision win, but despite being ahead, he turned up the pace and landed a beautiful combo of kicks and punches that dropped his opponent. He followed up on the ground until the referee stopped the bout.
Luis Saldana received a UFC contract.
Jared Vanderaa def. Harry Hunsucker via 1st round TKO.
A Heavyweight fight to kick things off, with a combined weight of over 500lbs between the two. Hunsucker got off to an explosive start, landing some huge punches and looking like he could secure a KO win. He than began getting a bit too loose and confident, dropping his hands and swinging punches. These sloppy punches allowed Vanderaa to initiate a body lock and get the fight to the ground. From there, Vanderaa unleashed heavy ground and pound, and Hunsucker couldn’t escape until the referee stepped in.
Jared Vanderaa received a UFC contract.
A great night of fights and we look forward to seeing more from these athletes in the UFC.
