As we all know, Boxing is a sport, and the UFC is a promotional organisation for the sport of MMA. However, because of the UFCs dominance through bringing the sport to the masses, it’s often looked at as the sport itself.
Because of the UFC being one promotion, it’s easy for them to do what they like, and have a clear plan/structure for its athletes, which includes its champions.
Boxing however, has many different promotions and bodies within it. This means it’s not as straight forward for its athletes, and there can be several belts across each weigh division.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Eddie Hearn was asked whether the sport has too many belts.
“We do [have too many belts]. If you look at the UFC model, which we’re all envious of. It’s one promotional company and one belt. That’s where I want to get to in Boxing. And it’s going to take a lot of work, but we’re putting the blueprint in for that. It’s something that we’re going to be pushing hard for in 2020 as we continue to expand. But what we do have to understand is belts do matter,” said Hearn.
Hearn also added that the franchise situation by the WBC was a terrible mistake, and there are now too many divisions and promoters within the sport.
Although this may sound like a good idea to some, Boxing is a completely different beast, and it’s hard to imagine so many different divisions deciding to change their ways.
As the UFC continues to grow, it’ll be interesting to see how/if Boxing adapts.
