Back in May, Justin Gaethje faced Tony Ferguson, for the UFC Interim Lightweight Championship.

Gaethje largely dominated Ferguson, but what was also praised was his cornerman (Trevor Wittman) and his ability to guide Gaethje to victory.

Wittman told Gaethje in between rounds to “Take ten per cent off your shots… You’re trying to kill him”!

This advice led to Gaethje pacing himself, until finishing Ferguson in the final round. A win that would seal his opportunity to face Khabib for the undisputed Lightweight title.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez was asked at the UFC 254 media day about his thoughts on Gaethje’s corner during his last fight.

“Fantastic, compared to the other corner that didn’t know what the heck they were doing”. Mendez said that in his opinion, Tony Ferguson’s corner “weren’t used to what happened, and they didn’t know how to bring their fighter back”.

In relation to the two corners, Mendez added: “So it was a great corner versus a corner that was lost”.

One of the men in Ferguson’s corner was Eddie Bravo, who told Joe Rogan on his podcast that he shouldn’t have been in there, and that he froze.

Tony Ferguson is currently looking for an opponent, to earn his way back to Khabib. But Khabib believes that Ferguson is finished after the recent beating he received.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje goes down on October 24th.
